1981Robert Nesta Marley was born in Nine Miles St. Ann, Jammaica. His father Norval Sinclair Marley was a white British-Jamaican born in 1895. He died of heart attack when Bob was 10 years old. His mother Cedella Booker is a Jamaican and is still alive. Cedella and Norval were to be married on June 9th, 1944.

Bob's father travelled extensively and was rarely home, but always provided for his family. After his death Cedella and son (Bob) moved to Trench Town. Because he was of mixed heritage Marley prejudice and was picked on; Due to this he learned self defense and eaner the nickname 'Tuff Gong'. At age 14 he left school, began an apprenticeship as a welder and followed his new-found passion for music.

Marley regularly honed his skills as a singer at local jam sessions with his mentor Joe Higgs, a devout Rastafarian. Bob first recorded 2 ska tunes in the early sixties but they failed to get any attention at the time. After meeting Peter Mclntosh and Bunny Livingston at jam sessions, the three vocalists then assembled a six-piece ska group they first named The Teenagers and then The Wailing Rudeboys before settling on The Wailing Wailers in 1963..
