Bob Marley

The Wailers with reggae producer Coxone Dodd.

The groups first taste of sucess camewhen the Coxone record label released Simmer Down just prior to Christmas, in February 1964. It was a big hit in Jamaica...the first of many to come (Rude Boy, Rudie, Jailhouse, One Love, Put It On). Despite acheiving this success locally, the group struggled financially and eventually Bob moved to the Delaware, US with his mother. There he worked in a factory in Delaware, saving to finance his next planned career move. After eight months Bob moved back to Jamaica and reformed the group now re-named 'The Wailers'.

This was a period when the music scene in Jamaica began to shift, as it eventually does everywhere. Ska was losing it's dominance and rock-steady was the new thing. Record sales for the Coxone label fell due to a failure to adapt. The Wailers were not happy with the fact that they were not seeing any financial rewards for there work anyway. They soon left the label, starting their own Wail'N'Soul' label and shop based at Marley's home in Trench Town. The records were now distributed personally by members of the band. The time neccessary and financial cost of this plan soon began to take it's toll. Sales were slow and record shops took to long to pay for those records that did sell. Making music is what musicians do. The label was eventually dissolved.

The Wailers with producer Lee Perry.

(Cont'd) In 1970 The Waliers started working with producer Lee Perry and his Upsetter label, formed in 1968. This was when Aston (Family Man) and Carlton (Carlie) Barrett from the Upsetter studio band, joined the Wailers . They remained as an integral part of Bob Marley's band until his death. The reggae music that was created in ths period has been rated as the best the Wailers ever recorded. I must agree...Tracks like My Cup, Duppy Conqueror, 400 Years, Small Axe, Soul Rebel, Pimpers Paradise. They vibe captured on theses recordings remain inspiring!
