The innovators of Jazz.

Dizzy Gillespie – along with his trademark bent trumpet - was one of its main exponents, and went on to pioneer yet another jazz variation – Latin jazz.

Other famous bebop jazz musicians included Thelonius Monk, with his unique playing style and catchy tunes; and Charlie Parker, known for his skill with the saxophone.

The late 1950s were a time of major innovation in jazz, resulting in another trend - so called cool jazz, originating on the west coast and using many instruments not usually associated with jazz.

For the first time in its history, jazz was dominated by white musicians – among them, Chet Baker, Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan.

Similar in concept to cool jazz was modal jazz, which eliminated complex chord sequences and offered a more open sound. One of the most influential jazz figures at this time was Miles Davis whose 1959 album “Kind of Blue” remains the best selling jazz album of all time.

And the 1950s also saw the appearance of John Coltrane who would become one of the most innovative jazz musicians of all time.

His album “Giant Steps” is a jazz classic but he also experimented with more unusual offerings – a jazz version of the soundtrack to “Sound of Music.”
