Working with the late Crowned Prince of Reggae

Dennis Brown was one of the most gifted reggae singers to come out of Jamaica. His first International hit was a tune titled 'Money In My Pocket' which topped the Jamaican as well as UK Top of the Pops.

From that point he never stopped cranking out hit after hit....tunes like 'Have You Ever'...'Stop Your Fighting'....'No Man Is an Island'...'Love Has Found A Way' to name a few. The list is too long.

The first time I met Dennis Brown was in Jamaica in the late sixties. My late Uncle, Steven Ricketts was headmaster of his own private school (St. Steven's College), located on Retirement Road, Kingston 5. One day Dennis showed up as a new student. I think by then he already did 'Money In My Pocket'...I'm not really sure. But I was aware that he was a singer.

Anyway I vaguely remember bringing my guitar to school a couple times to jam with Dennis. All I can remeber is What A Voice! Absolutely heavenly!

He did'nt stay at our school for long. The next time I saw him was years later, near my home at the time, Lismore avenue (Croos Roads). He was dressed a flashy pair of bell bottoms and a bright shirt.

I remember we had a conversation and he asked me to teach him to play the guitar. That didn't happen because we lost contact again......

The next time I saw Dennis was at least 20 years later in England, UK. I was doing sessons and live work in London and somehow got linked with him.
